I agree. The contrast in this version gives it much more strength. I think dulling down the background also did wonders; I think it was a bit busy in the previous version. Your control of the watercolors is also noteworthy.

I like this newer version better. The background doesn't distract as much from the focus of the image like the last one did. The background here helps them pop more instead of fade out into all the busy swirls and such. The brighter color makes it more friendly too. Got a sight contrast of colors going on and I think that helps.
I'd love to see you do something like this with a different pallette too. Great work with the watercolors.
