Would anyone care to explain this tradition to me please? Why the pumpkins, America, why?

Not so quite right pumpkin....

Another cartoon vector drawing with additions added to it. Used Inkscape for the vector drawing and colored it and added textures/background with Artweaver.  About 4 1/2 hours to complete. 2009.
