Join Us (At Your Own Risk)

Ang Sumsuman. (Two Men Drinking Tuba) 36 x 48 inches. Oil on Canvas. Click on image for details.

This is my entry to the "Join Us" theme. These two men are drinking a fermented alcoholic drink made from the juice of coconut fruits. Tuba can also be produced from the sap of a buri palm. In the evenings, Filipino men would gather in front of sari-sari-stores (little convenient store) and drink beer and tuba, sort of a "Happy Hour" event. They also have some sort of hors d'oeuvres such as grilled chicken, beef, pork or fish on skewers. These two men are eating grilled fish (with heads) on skewers. Tuba drinking is actually a macho practice and no self-respecting lady would ever join men drinking tuba or beer, so JOIN THEM at your own risk, in fact I don't know any woman who claimed to have drank tuba, but I did try it when I was a child since my Mother had a store. It actually tastes very good and you can easily get intoxicated. When you let a tuba stand for a long time, it will eventually turn to vinegar.

Cool piece, Ces! I like reading your story too. In Malaysia, the Sarawakian drinks fermented alcohol made out of rice. It's called 'tuak'.

Beautiful painting, Ces-my-friend! Tuba sounds intriguing. In Bali I liked drinking Brem - a rice or palm brandy.

I think every country has their own "fermented" alcoholic beverage. Some call it "moonshine" in the south. Very potent. Thanks.
