Summer!!!

These are pigment pen illustrations on 9"x12" Bristol Boards which I did for Summer. I eventually incorporated these illustrations in a Seasons Series. I had a most wonderful time creating these drawings and for a while I was drawing everyday for several weeks. I experimented with colored pencils and also did several more series drawings. Then money work had to interrupt my fun!

Cocktail Lounge

These are two types of cocktail lounges. The top is in the US and the other is in the Philippines. The two men below are drinking "tuba" an alcoholic beverage fermented from coconut juice. Both paintings are in oil on canvas.

Fuzzy hairs

Just to be clear, my drawing series are not usually focused on the clinical (although I drew a lot of microbiology specimen in my Microbiology class in college) or gross as my friend would say. These days I draw fifferent subject lines and just to make up for the gross but fiesty specimen clinging to a hair on my previous post, here is something more pleasant:

Hair

Phthirus pubis (pubic louse) locking its massive claw on a pubic hair as it swings across its host. From The Parasites Series. Pencil drawings on Bristol board. I did not finish this series. Every time I drew a specimen I started itching. Other drawings in the parasite series include clockwise from left: Aphidoidea (aphids); Sitophilus granarius (weevil); Cuculus canorus (Cuckoo bird); Giardia lablia. There were some intestinal parasites that made me sick therefore I did not post them. This was not a very pleasant series.

My Hometown

Above, the near-extinct lawa-an tree in Mabucal and below, Pihak Suba. Both ballpoint drawings in pocket Moleskine notebook.

I grew up in an island with beautiful shores and rain forests. The government denuded the rain forest for lumber and polluted the shores with unregulated, corrupt industries ran by cronies of the dictator whose wife had more than 5,000 pairs of shoes. It's been over twenty years and my childhood country is still recovering.

Tropical Jungle

I have not posted for a long time but have enjoyed viewing everyone's contributions. Here are a couple of posts for tropical jungle. The above image is composed of three separate pigment ink drawings on 9"x12" Bristol board panels.

Hidden Message

Hi Everyone, I have been having so much fun drawing that I have not painted for some time. Here are my latest fun projects - drawing trees and Fiesta dishes. Up next, SPRING and SUMMER. The individual images measure 9x12 inches and are drawn on Bristol board with micron pens. On every image are hidden objects. The trees also bear messages and sometimes entire paragraphs of famous works embedded in the trunk of the trees. I thought they may be appropriate for this week's theme.

King Jack

...and His Majesty's Colourful Domain. This is a black ballpoint pen and coloured pencil drawing of Anonymous Bird's famous Red Collared Lorikeet. He does look beautiful but check out the real one. He can jump and he takes a bath!!!

The Zoo

If I were an animal,

I would never want to be in a zoo.

I may be:

a bison astray from the herd,

or a tree lizard running away from a bird,

I may be one of three turtles trying to find my family sunning on the rocks,

or a horse gone astray like a goose fallen from a flock.

I may be a mouse running away from a snake,

or a swan swimming on a lake.

I would even be a bird fighting up in midair,

or a hare without a care.

I would like to live in a forest

whose canopy is filled with bird's nests

or even in a jungle where the monkeys sway

from one tree limb to another along the way.

I would like to be an antelope lazing in the grass,

or a fish swimming in water so clear like glass.

I would like to be a little duckling,

swimming in a straight line following my mother while chuckling.

I could be a buck whose horn has many points

or a slithering snake without joints.

A lizard up in the tree,

far away from mushrooms poisonous as can be.

In a range where rocks look wild

and some even look like a Madonna and Child.

Some trees clustered like a bran muffin

among birds that look like puffins.

In a forest free and mysterious

whose canopy look like men arguing and oh so serious.

In the wild I would be free as can be

Until men with guns come to shoot me.

Squiggle

I have not posted for a long time but have regularly visited and enjoyed everyone's posts. This week's topic is a coincidence for me. I published this post today which contained the illustration I made during my morning coffee. I thought it was appropriate for "Squiggle" :-) Talking about squiggle, I refer to it as a "Twist" and love this figure. The above image started with the idea of a snake but ended up a lizard. I figured I had drawn enough snakes and twisted trees.

Heaven and HELL!

Below, is my submission for both HEAVEN (I know it was for last week, that's okay) and HELL. This was a post I published on my blog. It was a drawing I made last week as I have been fascinated by trees. I have been dreaming of buying private land where there are still giant bamboo groves in the hope of saving them from total destruction. If you click on the image, you may find hidden figures.

Giant fig trees in what was once a staple in Philippine rain forests; denuded by foreign and national logging companies who bribed corrupt government officials. Today, mudslides and erosions are constant problems in the lowlands. When I was eighteen years old, my nursing classmates and I went to the mountains to transplant hundreds of trees on a totally barren and naked mountainside. It was one of the saddest sights I have ever seen. Ballpoint pen drawing on my pocket Moleskine ruled notebook.

After the war, they walked through the rain forest up in Mt. Canla-on through Mambucal. It was dense, dark and foggy. Then they came to a clearing. Viola! There stood the great tree with it's roots that looked like walls as tall as a man. They chopped it all down and all the other giant hardwood trees to make paper...

The Artist

I drew the above image last night after dinner and while on the phone with my friend. It is an image of my daughter handing me a drawing she made (see below) when she was five years old. My office (below) is full of artwork made by the children when they were little children. You may read the full story here.

These are real postage stamps made from images of my paintings. I used them to mail our Christmas cards last year.

Glass

It was not the glass ceiling that stopped absent-minded Isabella. She ran smack into the glass wall. She had to rearrange her priorities. Some re-engineering is required here; she thought “Perhaps there should be a potted plant to make the almost invisible wall more visible.” Her friend sighed and gently told her “But then you might walk into the potted plant!” Isabella just looked at her friend. If looks could kill…her friend busied herself with helping her pick up the papers and the coffee mug. They continued on their way to their offices and then they burst out laughing.
