Mother's Kiss

Okay. Here's a pastel drawing. I did this at the Belmont Shore Sidewalk Chalk Art event two weeks ago. I didn't win but I placed (fifth out of over 70 artists). It was a blast! I'll be doing it again next year. -- My first idea was a more traditional mother and child but I realized I was playing to the judges rather than being true to my style. I think I did better by doing something from my heart then from my head. This piece is on paper (for some reason they won't let us draw directly on the sidewalk) so I still have it. It's a little over 3 feet by 4 feet. Also, I was on the front page of the local newspaper doing this drawing with my daughter in the forground. That was fun too!

wow that is really beautiful mike! So smooth looking. I am glad you went with your own style and not a style just to please the judges... That shows a true artist!!

This is beautiful and I want to add that Chalk Artists are an enigma to me. They create incredible pieces of art only to get erased by the rain. I am glad the digital age allows the images to be captured and stored. I think if I did a piece of chalk art, I would feel incredibly liberated, nothing to hold on to, just live and create to the fullest and plop, plop, here comes the rain.

This is beautiful, I love how the mother streches herself just to reach the baby and kiss him. And the long arms, all around him.

I feel the same way Ces does! I am enchanted and amazed by chalk artists and this piece is no exception! Amazing and beautiful!

Totally superb!

nice flow, really sweet color - I like how the mother is kinda fiery and the baby is a calmer color: might be literal, might be that youre wife is a redhead and your daughter is... but it works on another level :-) very nice.

Really like this piece Mike, beautiful concept and colours.

So was this actually drawn straight onto the sidewalk? Wouldve loved to have seen it first hand.

Thanks for the comments too by the way.

Thanks, all!

Hey Gor, for some reason we weren't allowed to get chalk on the sidewalk so they taped high-quality paper down on the ground. Weird. I actually still have this drawing. But I did do one a couple of years ago in a parking lot. Even weirder - drawing an asphalt. That one was a really nice replication of a Degas ballerina painting. I decided after that that I would do my own work from now on and not copy work from masters to represent me. You can play to the crowd or play to your heart.
