Red Glass

Well, I didn't exactly paint a cup but I drew a glass. I do realise that the purpose of the challenge was to actually paint ON the cup. So this probably doesn't count :) I've been having trouble with drawing cylinders in perspective (car tyres, bolts, round windows, glasses...) - in other words, ellipses. And this is one instance I almost had it. Then I mucked up the base.

Watercolour pencil on Fabriano pastel paper.

sam! this looks great! that red, mixing thru to the orange light, just wonderful. have you ever played with 3d programs on your puter? i know this is going to sound weird, but TRADITIONAL art is really helped when you watch/learn how a COMUPTER draws a glass. you can make a cylinder, a torus (donut shape elipse) a cube, and see HOW the angles, the light, and perspective is figured out, and how at ANY view, some things don't change, but only appear to. it really helps me when i go back to paper, to study the digital 3d programs. ILLUSTRATOR has a little mini program, in the filters, called "3d render" and it does an EXCELLENT job depicting light source, angles, etc...

just a thought! hope it helps! :)

This is really good! I love how you've captured the wavyness of the glass.

Thanks, Froggie! I've used Illustrator to make references on some instances but I've found the interface extremely limited when it comes to pinpointing exact vanishing points for multiple objects. I can't really afford dedicated 3D programs for only this so I'm kind of stuck doing it the old-fashioned way... On the other hand I'm always happy to get away from the screen :)

Thanks to Lolo and Alexiev also! Buenos Aires is on my list of places to visit.

Wow, amazing job Samuli! It looks so real! hey, I've done so many cup drawings lately, I might follow your lead and post some too. (and yes, mine probably won't count for the challenge either)
