proverb

"A baby is an alimentary canal with a loud voice at one end and no responsibility at the other. "

Several evenings ago, there was a family dinner at my in-law's house. My wife and I attended, along with my wife's younger brother, his wife and two daughters, ages... um... somewhere between four and eight... or something close to that. Also on the guest list were my wife's cousin, her husband and two young sons, both in the approximate age range of my nieces. My thirty-year-old niece was there too, but since she is relatively well-behaved and doesn't fit into the "child" category anymore, she will merit merely this mention in the story.

Dinner proceeded like most dinners, with cross-table conversation punctuated by clinking glasses, rattling flatware and my father-in-law rolling his eyes in exasperation and saying, "I can't hear you." As usual, the children picked, uninterested, at their meals and bolted from the table early while the adults lingered over their plates. My eldest niece (hmmm! Two mentions!) stealthily began the preliminary clearing of the table to ready it for dessert. The living room, adjacent to the dining room, came alive with the unruly loudness of four rambunctious young cousins. The noise settled slightly after a visit by one of the parents — impatiently prompted by my father-in-law. Still, the muffled sounds of children's voices could be heard, though no actual words could be discerned.

samurai (part 1)

John Belushi — a more fearsome samurai there never was.

Samurai

he failed to kill the flying cockroach
and so on his knees with his own sword,
he took his life, and he died.
his last breath, a big, depressive sigh...
... such a death, of a great, brave samurai...

Challenge: Proverb

It never rains, but it pours. It takes one to know one. Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones... Those are proverbs - "short and pithy sayings that express some traditionally held truth." What is a proverb you like or use often?

Illustrate a Proverb! Links: Some English proverbs. Proverb list by country.

Challenge ends on March 14.

by CJ, with apologies to Leonardo

With many apologies to Edward Hopper!

Remake

This is my favorite paininting ever... Monet's bar at the Folie Bergere...
I remade it for the monday artday challenge... I should have had her wearing the crazy clothes I normally stick my ladies in.... but anyway. She represents time for me, time stuck where you don't want to be, lonely in a crowd, just a totally vacant expression becuase she's spent her time going inward....
My remake's expression is a little to serene looking, not at all the right "not there" look. Oh well... would have to spend way more time than I have to get this one right!

My Dora Maar..

Well, at least I tried..
That was my miniature Redo on "The Portrait of Dora Maar"- Picasso's, 1937.

Here is Picasso's original.

I think, mine has a bit of Monalisa's smile.

Enjoy!
Have fun with Art, everyone!

Horse With Hands Riding a Bike

A little late. Hope you don't mind. Almost did not post since I missed the deadline but I'm not sure if I'm ever going to be able to post this later down the road and be able to explain how I ended up drawing my dog Zucco in a horse costume riding a tandem bike with two hands. 'Twas a fun topic :)

Faimous painting redo: Leda

This is my take on the painting "Leda and the Swan" by Leonardo DaVinci.

Well, in fact, Leonardo's painting was lost and nobody from modern times has actually seen it, so it is mostly known from somebody else's redo, this copy, but I'm sure though that it bears more resemblance to the original piece than my version.

You can see more of my stuff here.

Famous Art

The Kiss by Gustav Klimt
retold by mike r. baker

I've been doing a lot of these. I'm aiming to do at least 21. You can see them on my bog.

Happy Presidents Day

There’s a place where we all long to go -- a place that puts a smile on our faces and love in our hearts -- a place where Peace and Tranquility abounds, and Joy and Laughter are in the air.
You just have to stop -- take a breath and recognize that this is heaven!   And, smile because isn’t that what we are all longing for?  It is here -- it is right in front of you, and the more you find it, the more it is there.
It envelops you and wraps the glow of love around you.  We have each found our own heaven -- many times!!!
It is when we stop to recognize the specialness of our moments and the people around us that we find our Heaven!
And that is what the Beach does for me.
Have a Marvelous Monday celebrating Presidents Day!

Klimt's Tree of Life

Redo a Famous Painting- ALIEN GOTHIC

Alien Gothic

What can I say, I love to depict aliens in human "earthling" settings. Of course this is recognizable as the iconic American Gothic with my version called Alien Gothic. I did this piece with prismacolor markers and colored pencil highlights. This was displayed at the Rahr West art museum in Manitowoc, WI along with many other works of art from some very talented artists from our art group "Art and About". I was pretty happy with the way it turned out.  This design was used on the 2009 t-shirt for Spuntnikfest held in Manitowoc.

ABOUT SPUTNIKFEST
Its early morning on September 6th, 1962 and the skies over Manitowoc are illuminated with an eerie green light. A bright object, burning like the sun creates an arc and plunges toward earth crashing smack dab in the middle of 8th Street! 49 years later…it’s wacky! It’s tacky! It’s time to celebrate with Sputnikfest 2011! Be hokey, fun, and ridiculous! Join us in September at the Rahr West Art Museum  for dancing in the streets, extraterrestrial snacks, an Artta this World Art Fair and a galaxy full of fun and frolic as we celebrate Manitowoc’s link to the space age!

Horse Riding a Bike...

Come on now. If a horse was really going to ride a bike it would have to be a tricycle. They couldn't balance on two wheels. -Ben Vaughn

Saturn's Son Devouring His Mars

I hope Mister Goya wouldn't mind ... or maybe he would? ... Ah well, he's not around to complain!

Famous Painting: A Special Moment

I based this illustration on Emile Munier's painting, "A Special Moment."
I enjoyed pulling details (the color scheme, clothing inspiration, vine-covered wallpaper,
and purple flowered carpet design) from the original.

redo a famous painting (part 2)

This is my second illustration for this challenge. Mrs. Pincus made the suggestion for this version and I thought it was a good idea — despite my dislike for Norman Rockwell’s work.

Careless horse with hands riding a bike!

Why chickens gave up crossing the road"

Here is my interpretation of the theme Horse with hands riding a bike. I have posted the original sketch I did last night on my blog and my reasons for choosing a safety theme.

I am trying to keep up with Illustration Friday themes as well as good story telling practice. I am really looking forward to the next one. That looks like fun. I have straight copied old masters in oil before in my early learning days but re-interpreting one like Amanda did looks like much more fun.

redo a famous painting

Pinkie by Thomas Lawrence, a delicate portrait of eleven-year old Sarah Barrett Moulton and Blue Boy by Thomas Gainsborough, a portrait of a young man believed to be Jonathan Buttall, the son of a wealthy hardware merchant, were purchased by American railway pioneer Henry Edwards Huntington and displayed opposite each other in his private collection at, what is now, The Huntington Library in San Marino, California.
