Vampire Squid
It's not easy being one of these blood-sucking denizens of of the deep... for starters, just try finding a fish's neck.I've been wanting to draw one of these things forever, and this week's M.A.D. challenge was the perfect opportunity.
Hollywood's creepiest monsters and aliens have nothing on this guy – Vampyroteuthis Infernalis is like Dracula, the Alien, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the Invisible Man all rolled into one super-cool alien being. With its vampire-like cloak, barbed tentacles, and huge glowing eyes, the Vampire Squid really does look like something from another planet... in a way, I guess it is from another planet.
For some cool footage check out "Vampire Squid" on Youtube.

Easter Gift From a Dead Mother, Take 2
I lift them from the floor, two crisp dollar bills
folded in half as they came from the card
twenty years ago. Cadbury Creme Eggs
from my mother because that year, like so many,
I was dieting. I had not yet learned I was allergic
to chocolate. The dollars were meant, like candy,
to be as fleeting as the words, "Hello, I love you!
Delightful to see you. Here's a little Easter treat." Yum
yum, gobble, gobble. But somehow, the paper eggs
never got eaten. I, who pride myself on imagination,
could think of no small treat both safe for a dieting palette
(or mind) and sufficient to honor my mother's boundless
love. She meant only to include me and would laugh or cry
at such agonizing deliberations over twenty years.
This morning, I knocked the precious dollars
from their perch beside my bed—perhaps to remind me
that when I pass on, no one will know the value
of this money. Maybe someone will stick them
in a wallet and spend them with ordinary money
for gas, dry cleaning or a soda for my son.
May that soda explode in rainbow flavors
and free the burden and glory of two
generations of love (hallelujah!) onto
that cherished and unsuspecting tongue.

cephalopod
I was inspired to write a poem to accompany my illustration. (Actually, I wrote the poem first.)
Never been to Madrid
But Tulsa was where he was born
Joey the Squid
On that Mid-Western grid
His ancestral lineage was sworn
Joey the Squid
Had a brother, he did
A cephalopod with the sobriquet Max
Joey the Squid
In his shadow he hid
Shamed by the repute that he lacks
Joey the Squid
By Max was outdid
So dejected he slunk away sad
Joey the Squid
In his last futile bid
Would show Max that he was no cad
Joey the Squid
An unusual kid
Ascended high over the crowd
Joey the Squid
Fumed, yes he did
And he swore he would make himself proud
Joey the Squid
Of his sibling was rid
And his pride swelled and soared like a jet
But Joey the Squid
Oh dear Heaven forbid
Got caught in a fisherman’s net

I find that I sometimes get very stuck because I want everything to be perfect, so the objective this week is to complete a picture and then move forward to the next step or next project.

Weekly Challenge: Cephalopod

This week's challenge word is:
Cephalopod
A cephalopod could be a squid, cuttlefish, octopus, or nautilus. Have fun with it!
And The Winner Is... Josh Pincus!
The winner for the "telephone" challenge is:Josh Pincus!
Congrats, Josh. I chose Josh's "Alexander Graham Bell" this week as it perfectly illustrates the theme and is just plain funny and clever. Great work, Josh!
I made this illustration as a Christmas gift for my wife. She is dancing on our bed with our 2 ferrets
the one she is holding is called Man.bear.pig as the South Park character and the one holding her leg is called Maricica (a Romanian typical name)
Project2 (Children's book) many Artists
Every artist in the book will illustrate one story and the funds will be donated to help sick children.
If you want to learn more please visit http://goodstogold.com
I already got my story from the author and made the first illustration... which I HATED so now I have been working really hard to make a more artsy and deep representation of the story.
Here is the illustration I finished: (but will not be using)
Project 1 (Children's book)
The book has no publisher yet... but I am very optimistic and think it will be available by the end of the year.
The story is about a Robot that wants more in life than just being a robot so he goes out and looks for his real call trying to fit in as many different things in many different places.
These are only the first rough sketches... many of them will never be published and most of the story is still unillustrated...
I will post the sketches in the order they were intended, but bear in mind that there might still be illustrations in between.
Anyway I would love if you could give me your opinion.

peeling paint
When I was a kid in the early 1970s, TV stations showed a lot of public service announcements. Most of them were for causes that are outdated, like THIS ONE for Radio Free Europe. Some causes have had numerous updating over the years, like this Smokey Bear PSA (featuring narration by the great Paul Frees). There was THIS famous one featuring the late Iron Eyes Cody and narrated by William Conrad, of "Cannon" fame.
But there was one that, even as a child, freaked me out. It was for the dangers of children ingesting lead paint. It was set in a run-down apartment building. While the narrator spoke, a small boy stared out a window, wide-eyed and purposeless and possibly abandoned. As the horrors of lead poisoning are expounded, the boy turns to the camera, picks some paint chips off the crumbling window sill and pops them in his mouth.
"Why doesn't the cameraman stop him?", I thought.

sakuntalam
sakuntala, here, writes a letter to her beloved, dushyanta, as her maid anasooya watches.
telephony gets us all a little too close to the point of getting bored of the constant 'connection'. the lotus-leaf letter means a lot more, in many a unique ways.

And The Winner Is... Maryam!

The winner for the "Disaster" challenge is:
Maryam!
Congrats, Maryam. Great entries, everyone, but I chose "Gaza children" as the best. Whatever your politics, children suffering is truly a disaster. Beautiful image, Maryam.
