teresa graves

You're under arrest, Sugar!
The neighbors in Hyde Park knew her as "Tootie", the devoted daughter who came to take care of her ailing mother. She had the back porch enclosed and turned into a bedroom so she could stay with her mother full time. She was a devout Jevhovah's Witness and was active in raising awareness of the persecution of fellow Jehovah's Witness in Malawi. On October 10, 2002, Tootie was asleep in her bedroom when a space heater malfunctioned and burst into flames. Tootie's mother managed to escape, but emergency workers removed an unconscious Tootie from the home. She died from burns and smoke inhalation. Her neighbors never knew of Tootie's prior life of fame.

Tootie was Teresa Graves, the iconic star of the 1974 police action series Get Christie Love! Patterned after 70s blaxploitation films, Get Christie Love! was very popular, despite only lasting one season. Teresa had worked her way up in show business, first starting as a member of the easy listening group The Doodletown Pipers, then becoming a regular on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In in its third season. But, it was Get Christie Love! that made Teresa a household name. She retired from acting in 1983.

When she died in that house fire in 2002, she was just "Tootie" to those closest to her.

Family of " friends"

This is my family of friends that I have used as  a seasonal blog header.
I am referred to as the love goddess while each other lady has their own reference. I tried to capture them in their own unique element. Fairy goddess didn't recognize herself, although her kids knew exactly who she was. A funky high heel wearing grandma who works out five times a week!!!  Again much laughter ensued from these characters!!

Family

My brother requested long ago a caricature of his family.
So I surprised him with a cool likeness of his wife and children in this digitally drawn Christmas card.  He was thrilled and always gets a chuckle out of my work!

Horse

A white arabian horse I drew a while back.

ചിരിസ്റ്മസ്അപ്ഡേറ്റ്

Christmas has been good to me this year. I have been given the amazing ‘The Batman vault’ (Running press ISBN 978-0-7624-3663-7) and the very impressive ‘The art of Osamu Tezuka’ (ILEX ISBN 978-1-905814-66-4).
I am also reading ‘Buddha: vol 5 and 6’ (by Osamu Tezuka published by Harper Collins). I love this series.
On the drawing front I plan to post some more Jo Blight images soon. I have to also start work on my entry to the world handmade picture book contest in Japan. This is held by the Oshima Museum of Picture books in Toyama. I have been very lucky to have visited the museum 3 times so far, the last time was in July this year with my family. I intend to post some images from this project on the Blogg as I go. So keep looking for up dates.

Tim, The Horse and The Princess.

"The first time the Horse and The Princess came to visit, Tim felt he was dreaming; that was until the next day, when his father found the 'sword' holes in his best leather jacket....": Illustrator" Andrew Finnie. For further work catch me at home. And, as always click for big and thankyou for taking the time to look. Apologies to Mike, I thought the topic was "The Horse and The Princess!" Oh, I am such a thickhead! Ho. Merry Christmas everyone, see you soon!

Family

Ah, the Holidays. A time for friends and family. Lots of good junk food to get fat on and vacation time. I almost always choose to stay in New York for Christmas and this year is no exception. I pick up as many shifts at work as I could so that all my co-workers could take time off. Then I'll take two weeks in January to go see the family and just have a break from waiting on ungrateful human beings.

However, this year I've been kinda bummed out cause I'm not going to get to go back to Maine to see my family. Its been a strange year with the death of a family member, his evil wife taking advantage of my grandmother, my sister selling her house... and blah blah blah.

Yesterday, New York go dumped on by almost a foot of snow and I was excited cause I had that moment where it felt like Christmas long ago. People were outside throwing snowballs, digging out parked cars, making snow angels and of course, making snowmen. Which is where the inspiration for this illustration comes from.

The people in the image from left to right are Snowman Christopher (my nephew,) Snowwoman Nana J, Snowwoman Dawn (my sister,) live John (Me,) Snowwoman Lynn (my mom,) and Snowdog Cee Cee.

This is for everyone who is away from their family this holiday! I hope that you find some way to make it bright! I'll be doing it with my "New York Family" Katz Deli style and then ice skating in Prospect Park.

Happy Holidays!

secrets

Miss Dik-dik and Sir Thylacine have many secrets..... sshhhh...

A new illustration! Hurray!  I haven't posted in a super long time, so here you go!  I don't know how I completed the frame without exploding - I'm not very patient, so I just did one side then mirrored it... But just doing the one side was painful enough :)

New Challenge - Horse

The new challenge is:

Horse!

Illustrate a horse or two or a pony. Horses are famous throughout legend, myth, and tales, from frightening to cute. Saddle up, artists!

The "Frog" challenge is over. The new challenge is "Horse" and ends on January 4, 2010. The "Family" challenge continues for another week and ends on December 28, 2009.

And The Winner Is... Claudio Rodriguez Valdes!

The winner for the "Frog" challenge is:

Claudio Rodriguez Valdes!

Congratulations to Claudio Rodriguez Valdes. I chose Claudio's "Look What I Found!" as the winner for the Frog challenge. Charming and fantastic, like a giant Miyazaki character, Claudio's imaginative painting is funny and joyful.

If there's ever anything that makes me want to run from this blog screaming, it's the arduous task of choosing a winner. The artwork here is always amazing and wonderful. The frog challenge was a knock out! I actually got the opinions of about 100 8th graders for the selection of this winner. They had a hard time too but most of them responded with the greatest delight to Claudio's frog. Biggest standouts for me were Katalin's wonderful frog prince, Andrew's Tim and the Frog, Evie's beautiful watercolor, Josh Billing's Froggy Christmas, Roberta's frog scientist, and the gorgeous design work and colors of Sandra Vargas' Frog! But even those are a tough choice over the rest of the incredible frogs all of the other artists submitted here. Thank you for such amazing work, everyone!

michael johnson

thought you didn't see me, now, did ya?
On September 10, 1995, two men robbed a convenience store in Lorena, Texas. 27 year-old Jeff Wetterman was shot and killed during the robbery. The two men, David Vest and Michael Johnson, each named the other as the gunman. Vest pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and, in exchange for an eight-year sentence, testified against Johnson. Despite his unrelenting denials, Johnson was found guilty and sentenced to death by lethal injection.

As per prison policy, guards check every fifteen minutes on inmates facing imminent execution. On October 19, 2006, Johnson spoke briefly with guards at 2:30 AM. When the guards returned for their 2:45 AM check, they discovered Johnson unresponsive and lying in a pool of blood. He had fashioned a metal blade attached to a stick and slit his jugular vein. He had enough time, before he died, to write "I didn't do it" on his cell wall in his own blood.

Crying Frog

Well, it's a frog that is crying.

Earth animals are not my strong suit as they are very particular in how they do or do not look. However, my attempts are made. I do wish I had more access to a scanner as doing paint things is a bit dragging, sometimes.

All in all, I feel like I did a very good job.

FAMILY (Circus 1)

I finished this illustration just yesterday... I am working on a book and this is one of the finished pages.

I always thought that all the people and animals in the Circus were part of a big family... at least we can clearly see that they trust and support each other as a family.

If you like what you are seeing please check out my online portfolio or even better join my Artist Page in Facebook! or if you are more into fast sketches you can also check my sketch book out... See you there!

FROG(s)

Froggie Blues at the Swamp

My first Monday Artday post. Here is my frog post. " Froggie Blues at the Swamp". My daughter wanted me to finish the piece after seeing the sketch. I did this not too long ago and it does fit the word. So here it is. I hope you like it. Let me know.

Coqui

frederick fleet

husbands and wives and little children lost their lives/it was sad when the great ship went down
"Iceberg right ahead!"

Those famous words were spoken by lookout Frederick Fleet aboard the the RMS Titanic on April 14, 1912. Just after seven bells, Fleet saw a black mass in the ocean ahead. He immediately struck three bells and telephoned the bridge. His report received the standard "Thank you" reply. While still on the telephone, the ship started swinging to port. The starboard side of the ship scraped alongside the iceberg and ice fell on the decks.

As instructed in such emergency, Fleet began his second duty as lifeboat operator. He assisted in loading some 28 women and children and the boat was lowered to the water. In the morning, his lifeboat was picked up by the Carpathia.

In the aftermath of the Titanic disaster, Fleet served briefly as seaman on another ocean liner. Later, Fleet sailed with various companies, finishing with the sea in 1936. He worked as a shipbuilder, and as he grew older, he sold newspapers on a street corner in Southampton, England.

A few days after Christmas 1964, Fleet's wife died. Filled with a lifetime of guilt from his survival and now distraught over wife's death, Fleet hanged himself in January 1965. He was the last victim of the Titanic.

The Joy of ..... Family.

Aha, I hope you don't mind, I decided Jessie should have a happy Christmas with his family after all. ..... though he really shouldn't play with fire..... hmm, just like uncle Nesbitt shouldn't use a mallet without paying attention. Illustrator: Andrew Finnie. Catch me here. And thanks for looking!

Cutest Member of the Family

This is a pastel work I've done for my sister a few months back. It's a portrait of her and her new baby, Naiah. He's the newest, and so far, the cutest member of our family.

BEN -family challenge

Ben wears whatever and brings books to restaurants.
I haven't posted in a while and since this illo I'm working on at the moment (for my book) has a frog in it...well, here it is.

Frogger at Home

Ah the domestic life of 80's video games. Surely someone has explored this premise before, but it made me happy to draw a frog with his version of Homer Simpson's "D'oh!" Notice how he borrows some of his buddy Qbert's foul language.

Family

This is my daughter who is transferring to finish her degree after Christmas. I promised her I would try to do an illustration of her. So here is my "attempt" at capturing her, which is quite hard to do.
